Urras Oighreachd Ghabhsainn is delighted to award £2,000 from the Community Investment Fund to WISCK (Western Isles Support for Cats and Kittens), supporting their vital work across Galson Estate.
WISCK was formed in 2019, when Cat’s Protection left the island, leaving a growing challenge with feral and abandoned cats. Since then, this volunteer-led charity has been working tirelessly across Lewis and Harris to rescue, neuter, and rehome or safely release feral cats and kittens. With around 35 volunteers across the Western Isles, including four based in Ness, WISCK also raises funds through raffles, craft fairs, donations, and their much-loved annual Piseag Pageant.
Feral cat colonies can quickly grow if left unmanaged, leading to overpopulation, disease, and an impact on local bird species. WISCK volunteers trap cats, ensure they are neutered, and rehome kittens or return healthy adults as barn cats, where they can continue to play an important role in crofting life as natural pest control.
This year there have been groups identified in Skigertsa, Eoropie, and Barvas and 14 cats and kittens have been trapped in these areas, and then neutered, rehomed or released. However, the costs of veterinary care remain high, with neutering fees of up to £120 per cat, not including food and medicine. The support of the Community Investment Fund will make a real difference in helping WISCK to continue this essential work. By protecting animal welfare, reducing environmental impact, and encouraging community engagement, WISCK’s efforts are making a lasting positive impact across the estate.
