Learning from the land -
learn traditional peat cutting with Galson Estate trust
Every year we offer people the opportunity to take part in a hands-on, heritage-focused peat cutting course that not only teaches the traditional skill but also promotes responsible and sustainable practices.
The course tends to offer the opportunity to learn directly from local experts; with decades of experience, they guide participants through the practical steps of turfing, cutting and lifting peats for drying, while sharing the rich history and local stories that connect the community to the land.
The course is perfect for beginners looking to learn the skill, or for those seeking a refresher before returning to their own peat bank this season.
As well as learning traditional skills, attendees will be introduced to sustainable cutting methods, ensuring this cultural practice continues in harmony with the environment. Don’t miss this chance to connect with tradition, land, and community, all while learning a skill that has shaped life here for generations.
This year's course runs over three morning sessions on Saturday 25th April, 2nd May and 30th May, from 10am to 12:30pm. Across the sessions, you’ll be introduced to the tools and techniques used in peat cutting, along with the practical steps involved in preparing and working a peat bank. The full course costs £100, which includes your own peat iron (tairsgeir) to keep. Alternatively, you can take part in the course for £20 without the tool. Both options cover all three sessions.
