Learning from the land -
learn traditional peat cutting in Galson Estate
Residents of Galson Estate are invited to take part in a hands-on, heritage-focused peat cutting course that not only teaches the traditional skill but also promotes responsible and sustainable practices.
Running over three Saturday mornings in May and June - 10th and 17th May, and 14th June, from 10am to 12pm - the course offers the opportunity to learn directly from two local experts, Donald Ba Macdonald and Roddy Martin. With decades of experience between them they will guide participants through the practical steps of turfing, cutting and lifting peats for drying, while sharing the rich history and local stories that connect the community to the land.
Held at a peat bank behind the UOG Business Centre, this course is perfect for beginners looking to learn the skill, or for those seeking a refresher before returning to their own peat bank this season.
As well as learning traditional skills, attendees will be introduced to sustainable cutting methods, ensuring this cultural practice continues in harmony with the environment.
Participants also have the option to purchase a tairsgeir - a traditional peat iron - to use during the course and take home. The full package (course plus tairsgeir) costs £100, while attendance without the tool is just £20. There are only 12 spaces available: 6 with the tairsgeir included, and 6 course-only spots, so early booking is encouraged.
Please note: While we’re hoping for dry skies, the course may be rescheduled in the event of poor weather.
Don’t miss this chance to connect with tradition, land, and community — all while learning a skill that has shaped life in Galson Estate for generations.
