Deer management update

We are aware that deer have returned to our villages and crofts, taking advantage of the end of the shooting season, which will not resume until winter. Attracted by the fresh green grass and blooming garden shrubs, they tend to linger in these areas, making it challenging to encourage them back to the moor, where the natural vegetation, primarily heather, is far less appealing.
For safety reasons, it is not possible for our volunteers to carry out deer management within village boundaries. If deer are causing a disturbance, we kindly ask residents to help deter them by making loud noises to encourage them to move on.
Our deer management team will resume operations on October 21st. During the last season, our dedicated volunteers worked exceptionally hard and exceeded the target set by NatureScot, successfully culling over 100 deer. This effort is part of a broader strategy to bring the deer population to sustainable levels.
It is important to note that while progress is being made, a noticeable reduction in herd numbers will take time. Deer will always be present on the Estate to some extent, but we remain committed to working with our partners to manage the population responsibly. Public safety will always be our highest priority and deer will not be shot within village areas.
If you are phoning UOG out of hours to report an incident, you can leave a voicemail on this number, 07399092779, and we will respond as soon as we are able to. In an emergency situation, please contact the police.
