The machair, lochs and crofts of Lewis became the ultimate classroom this week as P7 pupils from the north and west of the island took part in Siuthad!, a three-day outdoor adventure designed to support the big move from primary to secondary school.
From 29th April to 1st May, children from Sgoil an Taobh Siar, Lionel, Shawbost and Breasclete ventured beyond their classrooms to explore new places, try new activities, and make new friends, all as part of a unique transition programme funded and delivered by Urras Oighreachd Ghabhsainn, Urras Oighreachd Chàrlabhaigh and Urras Oighreachd Bharabhais.
Over the three days, pupils got stuck into everything from mountain biking and canoeing to survival skills in local woodlands. They experienced life on the croft with a visit to a fank, took a step back in time at Arnol Blackhouse, and even helped care for the local environment with a beach clean-up. The programme not only encouraged confidence and resilience through hands-on activities, but also sparked curiosity about the cultural and environmental heritage of the area.
“Heading to secondary school is a big step for young people,” said Mairi Graham, Development Officer at Urras Oighreachd Ghabhsainn. “Many of these pupils come from small schools, where they might not have had the chance to meet others in their year group. Through Siuthad!, they build friendships, confidence, and a sense of belonging before stepping into the Nicolson Institute in August.”
The name Siuthad! - Gaelic for go on! - is fitting. It encourages young people to push themselves, try something new, and move forward with excitement. What began in 2020 as a partnership between Galson and Carloway Estate Trusts has grown into a collaborative, community-powered programme that continues to evolve and inspire. This year marks the first with Barvas Estate Trust as an official partner.
The success of the programme wouldn't have been possible without the generous support of local organisations and individuals. Special thanks go to Chris Barrowman, Simon Amos, Historic Environment Scotland, Harris Tweed Hebrides, Stornoway Canoe Club, Horshader Community Development, Galson Motors, Scaladale Centre, Hebridean Minibus, Barvas and Brue Community Centre and Ionad na Seann Sgoil.
As the three days came to a close, one thing was clear: Siuthad! isn’t just about the transition to high school - it’s about adventure, community, and connection. And for these young adventurers, it’s only the beginning.
