"This site is located in the old graveyard in Swainbost and is the second largest chapel in Lewis. The largest is St Columba's at Eye.

"St Peter's is over 60 feet long, but the only remaining part is the southernmost end which has an attractive window. It is in a beautiful location, in the western spot of the graveyard with the Swainbost river close by.

"Between it and the shore is a place called 'Na h-Annaidean' and 'Cnoc an Annaid'. 'Annaid' is an ancient name for a church location. This name also is found in Shader, close to St Peter's Chapel, and on Killegray in the Sound of Harris, and in Eilean Garbh in the Shiants."

An extract from The Chapels and Healing Wells of the Western Isles by Finlay MacLeod, published by Acair Books, 1997.
