THE VILLAGES / NA BAILTEAN
History and information / Eachdraidh agus fiosrachadh

EORODALE / EÒRADAL

Eorodale (Gaelic: Eòradal) is a small village in the northeast of Ness, between Adabrock and Skigersta.

It has 3 wells - Tobar Iain Fhionnlaigh, Tobar Choinnich Riabhaich and Tobar Ealasaid. These springs and the Adabrock well are mainly fed from the same source. They lie more or less in a line from the south end of Eorodale to the west end of Port village (Reference: Criomagan Issue 5 1998).

There are no facilities available in Eorodale now (probably due to its small size compared to other villages in Ness), but at the time when it was usual for every village to have several shops. Eorodale had 2:

Bùth a' Bhèiceir: John MacDonald - Pre 1900. This was a small grocer’s and also a bakery.

Bùth Alasdair Tharmoid Bhuidhe: Alexander MacDonald. Small grocer’s shed at west end of existing house. (Reference: Criomagan March/April 1996)

’S e baile glè bheag a th’ ann an Eòradal (Beurla: Eorodale) ann an ceann ear-thuath sgìre Nis, eadar Adabroc agus Sgiogarstaigh.

Tha trì tobraichean ann – Tobar Iain Fhionnlaigh, Tobar Choinnich Riabhaich agus Tobar Ealasaid. Tha na fuarain seo agus Tobar Alasdair Buachaille, ann an Adabroc, a’ tighinn bhon aon mhàthair-uisge. Tha na ceithir tobraichean nan laighe an ìre mhath ann an loidhne bho thaobh deas Eòradail gu ruige taobh an iar Port Nis. (Criomagan 5 1998)

Chan eil goireasan sam bith ann an Eòradal an-diugh (’s dòcha gu bheil seo a rèir cho beag ’s a tha e an coimeas ri bailtean eile san sgìre) ach nuair a bha e na chleachdadh bùth no dhà a bhith anns gach baile, bha dà bhùth ann an Eòradal.

Bùth a’ Bhèiceir: Iain MacDhòmhnaill, ro 1900. B’ e grosair beag a bh’ ann an seo cho math ri bhith na bhèicear.

Bùth Alasdair Tharmoid Bhuidhe: Alasdair MacDhòmhnaill. Bha seada ghrosair beag air taobh an iar an taighe a tha fhathast ann an-diugh.
