FIVEPENNY NESS / NA CÒIG PEIGHINNEAN

The name Fivepenny comes from the rent paid on the crofts - five pennies.  Fivepenny is next to Eoropie in Ness. It is known as Na Còig Peighinnean locally but Còig Peighinnean Nis to distinguish it from Fivepenny Borve. There is a small shop in Fivepenny owned by Edna MacLeod who handmakes and sells soft furnishings. Beside this is ‘The Middle Room’, a small art gallery selling handmade stoneware ceramic jugs, vessels and wall hangings.

Ness Football Club, established in 1933, plays on Fivepenny Machair. They have a ground with a capacity of around 1000 and play in the Lewis and Harris Football League. They enjoyed great success at the end of the 20th century, winning 13 titles in 20 years, but have not seen much success since the millennium. Ness F. C. Social Club is located next to the pitch.

Tha an t-ainm Còig Peighinnean a’ tighinn on mhàl a bhiodh air a phàigheadh air na croitean. Tha am baile ri taobh Eòrapaidh ann an Nis. Aithnichear e mar Na Còig Peighinnean gu h-ionadail ach Còig Peighinnean Nis gus eadar-sgarachadh a dhèanamh bho Chòig Peighinnean Bhuirgh. Tha bùth beag anns Na Còig Peighinnean a tha a’ buntainn do dh’Eithne NicLeòid; bidh i a’ dèanamh agus a’ reic bathar maoth airson taighean. Ri taobh seo, tha ‘The Middle Room’ – ealain-lann a tha a’ reic bathar criadha, dèanta leis an t-sealbhadair, leithid siugaichean, soithichean agus ealain chrochte airson a’ bhalla.

Bidh Sgioba Bàll-coise Nis, a chuireadh air chois ann an 1933, a’ cluich air machair Chòig Peighinnean. Tha ‘stand’ aca a ghabhas mu 1000 duine agus bidh iad a’ cluich ann an Lìog Leòdhas agus na Hearadh. Fhuair iad buaidh gu leòr aig deireadh an 20mh linn, a’ buannachadh 13 tiotalan ann am fichead bliadhna ach chan eil iad air a bhith cho soirbheachail, gu ruige seo, bho 2000. Tha Club Sòisealta Nis ri taobh an raoin-cluiche.
