The UOG Youth Forum was set up to ensure the active representation of the younger people within the Urras area. Hilary Morrison, Urras Director, was given the remit of forming the group and then encouraging the young folk to give their ideas and suggestions as to how the Urras could help young people become involved in its work. To date five young people have volunteered to be part of the group, and a very lively bunch they are too! Ideas gush forth from them.
2008 Activity – Youth Showcase
As there are several active youth groups within the Urras area (youth clubs, Gain, Roots and Wings, Duke of Edinburgh Awards, Cadets, playgroups etc.) the Forum felt that it would be good to show off this excellent work and for the groups to work more closely together. So the Showcase was born! It was staged at Sporsnis in October 08 and sponsored by the Urras. There was activities and presentations and it was a fun day for everyone, young and old.
2009 Activity – Island Trusts Youth Forum Get-Together
After a very successful Youth Showcase last October, we thought it might be a hard act to follow – but never ones to let the grass grow under our feet, we have something lined up for this September which might outshine the Showcase! We are hoping to have a Youth Forum get-together with nominated young people from all the Trusts in the Western Isles: Valtos, North Harris, Uist, and UOG, and including Stornoway. We had an enthusiastic, positive response when we approached the other Trusts with the proposal to nominate four young people with an interest in their community Trusts and the issues surrounding them, to a two day event at Scaladale Outdoor Centre, planned for 4th and 5th September. The programme for the two days is in outline at the moment but the days will be filled with interactive workshops, outdoor activities and group tasks, culminating in the production by the young folk, of a TV advert for their Trusts. Community Education and the John Muir Trust will have a major role to play in the delivery of the programme. Work will be required of the young people but also a lot of fun should be enjoyed too.
The nominees will be accompanied by two or three leaders from each of their Trusts, and with our gang will be Julie Seivewright, Hilary Morrison and Agnes Rennie, one of whom is too old to sleep in a bunk! Guess who?
