Ragged Robin (Lychnis flos-cuculi) is a member of the Pink family and is found predominantely in damp places such as marshes, meadows and pond and stream edges. ‘Ragged’ is from the much divided, thread-like petals. It is a plant with much superstition attached, particularly in Scotland. Men would carry the palnts in their pockets and success in love was determined by whether the plant thrived or not. By the 1600′s girls carried the plant as well under their aprons, giving each plant the name of a local boy. The flower that opened first would bear the name of the boy she would marry or who wanted to marry her. The plant also has sinister associations with goblins and evil spirits.
