The ranger service started in November 2005 and was supported with funding from Scottish Natural Heritage and Western Isles Enterprise for it to run for three years. In 2008 further funding was secured from Scottish Natural Heritage and The Robertson Trust which will see the ranger service continue until 2011.

The objectives of the ranger service are set out in line with SNH’s essential aims:

  1. ensuring a welcome for visitors to the countryside
  2. mediation between public use and other rural land uses
  3. promoting awareness and understanding of the countryside
  4. caring for and enhancing the natural heritage enjoyed by visitors
  5. assist the Urras in the promotion of it’s work.
